As many as 60,000 immigrants and their supporters join a peaceful but boisterous march through downtown to City Hall, waving flags and holding signs blasting the harsh new immigration law in Arizona.
Blasting Arizona's tough new immigration law as "unpatriotic and unconstitutional," Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday backed a boycott of the state and urged Southern Californians to join an immigrant and labor rights march this weekend that police say could swell to 100,000 participants.
"The debate has caused a call to action," Villaraigosa said.
Lerner, an East Los Angeles resident who works at El Centro de Accion Social in Pasadena, said he felt the rally was successful in spreading the message about comprehensive immigration reform.
"There needs to be national immigration reform, because the system doesn't really work," he said.

LOS ANGELES -- Red, white and blue were the colors of the day, and the police presence was minimal, as marchers crossed downtown and rallied at Los Angeles City Hall today to urge immigration reform.
It took more than four hours for a phalanx walking shoulder-to-shoulder on Broadway, six lanes wide, to pass Third Street en route towards City Hall.
